Cycas balansae

Cycas balansae was previously regarded as locally frequent although it never occurred in dense stands. Population estimates from 2004 were in excess of 10,000 plants in the wild and there were no immediate threats of extinction (Osborne et al. 2007). A survey done in 2018 in China showed an almost 90% decrease and only three plants were found. Subpopulations in Viet Nam have also been severely reduced over the past 10 years and fewer than 100 plants were found within five of the known subpopulations. However, additional subpopulations have also been located in Viet Nam where there are lower levels of decline. Overall, the population decline is estimated as 50-70% over the past 20 years; further extrapolation is difficult and so this is treated as a minimum decline for a three generation time period (120 years).
