Grayum (2003), indicated that it is one of the Mesoamerican palms in greatest danger, because Evans (1995) said, only ca. 100 individuals, are scattered through an unprotected and mainly deforested area between Siquirres and Parque Nacional Tortuguero.

The major threats to this species are deforestation and habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture and plantations, especially seeking land for pineapple plantations which is an increasing activity in the Costa Rica northern zone. Moreover, its habitat has a very fragmented or patchy forest cover.
