There is no information on population trends in this species, but it is described as common in Sicily, Egadi Island and locally frequent in Malta, rare in Campania, Basilicata, Puglia and Calabria (Márquez et al. 1996). On Malta it exists as a large single subpopulation in the localities of Dingli and Siggiewi and it is currently a stable population, but a significant area was lost due to past quarrying. A further reported population on the island of Gozo was never verified (S. Mifsud pers. comm. 2016).

There are no known major past, ongoing or future threats to this species. Quarrying and land reclamation in Malta may have contributed to a significant decrease locally, but on a global scale, this is rather negligible.
