Karamplianis and Constantinidis (in Phitos et al. 2009) state that the three subpopulations are small, with only few individuals. Specifically, the subpopulation in Etoloakarnania consist of no more that 100 individuals. They also state that the rest are very small. Therefore, we can safely assume that the population cannot exceed 1,000 individuals. Although, there is no recent information about population size.

Karamplianis and Constantinidis (in Phitos et al. 2009) mention, as possible threats, overcollection and change in land use. Also, the subpopulation of Vikos gorge is located within an area visited by many tourists.

In the latter, it is mentioned as Crocus speciosus subsp. speciosus, but according to The Flora of Greece Web (https://portal.cybertaxonomy.org/flora-greece), records from Greece of C. speciosus subsp. speciosus are erroneous and refer to Crocus hellenicus.
