This species is fairly common and often occurs in low, wet areas where it is well disbursed and there are numbers of individuals in a given locality. The AOO as calculated with a 50 km wide square around each recorded collection is 22,500 km2. The total population number can only be estimated but is certainly well over 1000 individuals and likely in a range of 5,000 to 10,000 individuals over the entire EOO. It is suspected that some of the collection records attributed to this species may belong to Costus nitidus which also can be seen with somewhat plicate leaves, but not as strongly plicate as Costus plicatus.

This species occurs in several localities within protected areas in the Golfo Dulce area of Costa Rica including the Corcovado National Park, Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce and the Piedras Blancas Blancas National Park. The species should be studies to confirm its phylogenetic relationship to Costus nitidus and ex situ seed bank conservation is needed.
