État de la populationExpert
This species is widespread but not common.  There have been only 17 recorded collections.  The area of occupancy has been calculated with a five km square around each of these collection sites, totalling 275 km2.  This assessor has been to two of the three areas where there have been recorded collections, and plants from this species or with strong affinity to this species have been found in both areas, but they were few and far between.  It is reasonable to estimate no more than three mature individuals per km2, suggesting a total population size of 825 individuals.

The central area around Turrialba where the type collection was made is now largely deforested and converted to coffee fields.   The collection records in Panama were mostly at lower altitudes between Almirante and Changuinola where deforestation is visible on Google Earth satellite images.  There is also a hydroelectric project under construction on the Rio Bonyic (also known as Bonjic) which could adversely affect the Panamanian subpopulation.

Based on these considerations it is reasonable to expect further declines in population of 10% per generation length (8 years) unless measures are undertaken to protect this species.

Description complète des menacesExpert
This species is threatened by continued deforestation for agriculture in the Turrialba area and the lower altitudes in its AOO in Panama.  The coffee fields are clearly visible via Google Earth satellite images in the Turrialba area where the type collection was made.  The hydroelectric project on the Rio Bonyic and planned electric transmission lines into neighboring Costa Rica may further threaten this species in the southern part of its range.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
There are subpopulations of this species located in two protected areas, the Monteverde area "Bosque de los Ninos" near Pocosol and the Costa Rican Reserva Hitoy-Cerere.  Plants in these areas should be monitored and managed to ensure the populations remain stable. The species is rare enough however that it should also be conserved ex situ in a seed bank and in botanical gardens.
