État de la populationExpert
This assessor has been to the two primary regions where this species is found.

In the northern region, the species was not found in the upper Monteverde Reserve, but along the lower trail leading down the Atlantic side to the Rio Penas Blancas one plant was seen.  On the Pacific side, one plant was observed apparently growing naturally on the campus of the University of Georgia at San Luis, but no others were found, including along the trail leading up to the catarata.  In the Pocosol area of the Tilaran Mountains, the species was not seen along several trails in the vicinity of the research station.

In the southern region, along the primary trails in the Tapantí National Park, this species was not seen but along the access road in the mountains above the village of Orosi, one plant was seen.

Based on these visits, it is believed that this species is not very common in its area of occupancy of 2,700 km2.  Its population size is estimated at 2,700 mature individuals based on one plant per km2.

Description complète des menacesExpert
No specific threats to this species are known but it is believed to be growing in some areas where it could suffer habitat loss from deforestation for agriculture and be impacted by tourism in the Monteverde area. Most of its area of occupancy is in protected reserves in the Tilaran Mountains and around the Tapantí National Park, but this species is likely to be very sensitive to habitat change as it is very difficult to grow in cultivation.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
This species population size is relatively small and should be surveyed and monitored to determine if there is any decrease in its population size.  The species also needs to be conserved ex situ in seed banks and more widely conserved in botanical gardens from new collections to preserve the genetic diversity.
