État de la populationExpert
Costus giganteus is very common in São Tomé (T. Stévart pers. comm. August 2008, de Oliveira pers. comm.).
Description complète des menacesExpert
The islands have suffered as a result of coffee, cocoa, banana, coconut and sugarcane plantations which have replaced large areas of the natural humid forests (Excell 1944). On Principe, large areas of forest were destroyed during a campaign to eradicate sleeping sickness (African tripanosomiasis) in 1906. The deforestation had led to soil erosion, which is a growing concern. There is currently estimated to be 40 km2 of primary forest on Príncipe, and 240 km2 on São Tomé (Gascoigne 2001). However, many endemic species have adapted to the shade forest found around plantations, which are used to protect the crops. Although some of the forest areas have been heavily damaged in the past, there is significant regeneration to secondary forest in many areas.
