Costus geothyrsus is now only known to occur in one small area at the type location at Hacienda Clementina in Los Rio province. According to Dr. Bertil Stahl, this species is "rather common, but seems to be growing only in the lower, somewhat disturbed part of the forest reserve." No actual population count has been made, but this assessor estimates that there remain 160 plants in this area, based on the number of collection records, the size of the area, and the comments made by Dr. Stahl. The estimate as calculated equals 10 plants per km² of the overall Area of Occupancy.
As explained under "Threats" the future of this population is uncertain but definitely at risk due to the very recent seizure and sale of the property by Ecuadorian taxation authorities.

Most of the property is a banana plantation, but the area around Cerro Semama has been protected for many years by the Alvaro Noboa family and held status as a private forest reserve authorized by the Ecuadorian Institute of Forestry, Natural Areas and Wildlife (INEFAN). In 2013 the property was seized by the Ecuadorian government for taxes owed by Noboa and the Exportadora Bananera Noboa S.A. In December 2013 the property was sold to a consortium of workers at the banana plantation, including the 2,200 hectares of the forest reserve and teak timber area. The future status of the protected area where this species is currently growing is uncertain thus creating some risk due to the change in ownership of the property. As of the writing of this assessment in March 2014, the reserve is believed to be under management of the Polytechnical University in Quevedo, Ecuador, and there is reason for concern that their interests are in the timber value and cash crops that can be grown in the lower altitude areas populated by this species.

There is currently no ex situ conservation action in place for this species. The private forest reserve protected area where it exists is currently at risk due to a change of ownership. A more complete inventory should be made of the plants of this species and any other threatened species that occur at this location. Taxonomic research is needed to investigate possible introgression between this species and Costus pulverulentus with the potential effect on preservation of the species.
Efforts should be made to encourage the current management of the forest reserve around Cerro Semama to continue to protect this remaining area of occupation for this species.
