In the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation (Krasnoborov 1988) the species is reported as declining, but it is not considered native to there. The subpopulation of this species is common in Turkey, but it is not known if this refers to populations within European Turkey.

This species is susceptible to Japanese beetle Popillia japonica which feeds on the foliage. No other major threats are reported for this species.

This is a valuable timber species, and harvesting methods must be sustainable to ensure this does not become a threat to the species. The species is protected by legislation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it has been assessed as Critically Endangered there. This species is recorded in 176 ex situ collections (BGCI 2016), however they may or may not be from a European source. Its is listed as Endangered in Albania (MEA 2013).
