The species is distributed in small, scattered subpopulations, ranging from a single individual to clusters of several dozen adults. The species is often found either as a single solitary palm or as small groves with large distances between subpopulations. In many cases, these subpopulations are fragmented, though the species is adapted to residential areas and pastures where it is commonly found. The population is considered in decline due to ongoing deforestation and loss of habitat associated with development (Global Forest Watch 2022).

Veloz et al. (2013) enumerated the subpopulations of Copernicia beteroana found at eight locations, totalling 685 adults, 2,360 juveniles and 518 seedlings. Several of the locations included multiple sites. However, it is difficult to know what portion of the total endemic population this represents, especially since no data from Haiti was included. Nor is it possible to estimate the degree that the population has declined over time.

The major threat to the species is the loss of habitat due to conversion of land use for agriculture and residential development. The species is over exploited in many areas where it is found thus negatively impacting its reproductive potential and natural growth development. In areas where the species was formerly common, a decline has been observed due to over exploitation of the species and the conversion of its natural habitat to development and agricultural use (Veloz et al. 2013). A decline is also inferred by deforestation trends on Hispaniola, as monitored by Global Forest Watch (2022).
