Black oak population studies, conducted in different localities, have shown diverse results, probably indicating forests in different conditions, some being affected by deforestation, others in processes of regeneration. Dávila et al. (2012) studied a total of eight black oak subpopulations in the Cueva de los Guácharos National Park and its surrounding area in the department of Huila. Their study concluded that average subpopulation densities varied from 240 individuals per hectare in Cueva de los Guácharos to 323 in surrounding areas. Those subpopulations showed low genetic diversity and unique alleles (Palacio-Mejía et al. 2005, Arroyave 2007), which could indicate genetic differences with populations in other parts of the country.

Subpopulations in four forest fragments along Serranía Peñas Blancas, in the municipalities of Tinamá and Acevedo, in Huila, had an average density of 746 individuals per hectare (Aguirre-Acosta and Botero 2018). Vegetation samples collected from those subpopulations also showed low genetic diversity, and again unique alleles (Aguirre-Acosta et al. 2013), probably as a result of severe fragmentation and isolation.

In the southern part of Huila department, where the main area of the black oak distribution is found, GIS studies using spectral signatures, estimated a total area of 40,000 ha for this species. Field studies later confirmed the presence of forest fragments of up to 100 ha and that the species is only found on the western side of the Eastern Cordillera and not on the eastern side facing the Amazon region.

In contrast, subpopulation studies carried out in Santander, in the municipality of Charalá, indicated that black oaks are found in very small patches of less than one hectare in size and along narrow riparian corridors. This study also found single trees in cattle producing pastures, as evidence of major processes of deforestation of black oak forests in that area.

The subpopulation in Virolín, near the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, in Santander, were found to be seriously affected by deforestation; as a result the total area of black oak forest in that region is declining due to anthropogenic factors (Cárdenas and Salinas 2007). In the municipality of Amalfi, Antioquia, Ariza et al. (2009) found isolated trees, but in Serranía de San Lucas, the subpopulation most recently found, there are monospecific forest patches of significant sizes (Andrés Avella, pers. com.). There is an urgent need to explore that region that may turn out to be as important as the one in Huila. Avella found black oak forest patches in good conditions, but also observed evidence of deforestation near urban and mining centres.

Other subpopulations in Santander, Antioquia and Valle del Cauca have not been studied.

This species is threatened by conversion to agriculture, cattle production, and urbanization (Etter et al. 2006, Forero 2010, Parra et al. 2011). Promoters of oak forest transformation include deforestation due to agricultural expansion, wood extraction for charcoal and timber production for buildings, mining (both legal and illegal) and the support of crops such as passion fruits. Trigonobalanus excelsa is threatened directly by logging and overexploitation as it is a valuable timber species. Some subpopulations are in recovery after heavy logging (Parra et al. 2011, Dávila et al. 2012, Moreno 2014, Avella et al. 2017, Aguirre-Acosta and Botero 2018). However, logging is likely to increase again due to the recent end of the FARC guerilla movement. Indeed, social and political conflicts prevented most logging, and it is highly probable that remnant forests fragments will be under new anthropogenic pressures.

Black oak forest remnants located in national parks and nature reserves are being protected. That is the case of those in Cueva de los Gúacharos and Farallones de Cali National Parks, and in the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary Guantentá-Río Fonce, in Santander. Several regional efforts are effectively protecting some black oak forest remnants; in Alto Bellavista, Huila, local coffee producing communities are protecting black oak forests remnants (Aguirre-Acosta and Botero, 2018) interested in ensuring the future of the watersheds and their biodiversity.

The main subpopulation in the Huila Department has now a better chance of being protected. The Huila regional environmental authority, Corporación Autónoma Regional del Alto Magdalena (CAM), is now coordinating the implementation of a conservation and management plan for black oak forests (Botero-Fernández et al. 2010) in that department. As part of that plan, the area of distribution of black oaks was given a special conservation status in 2018; Serranía de Peñas Blancas Integrated Management District, which covers the entire black oak forest subpopulations in the Department outside Cueva de los Guácharos National Park. In addition, under the conservation and management plan, research has been carried out on asexual reproduction and restoration plans for the species.

Although improvements have been made in the black oak conservation in Huila, deforestation is still a major threat. While producing the Forest Management Plan for that department (PGOF) in 2010, Fandiño and others estimated deforestation rates between 5.000 and 10.000 ha per year. This study, however, did not examine regional or forest type differences in those deforestation rates, but did emphasize the need for more careful monitoring of Black Oak areas.

The most northern subpopulations in the Antioquia and Bolivar provinces (Amalfi and San Lucas) have no protection and they have threats from habitat destruction and overexploitation. 

Some ex situ efforts have been initiated but with mixed results. The Bogota Botanical Garden has at least one individual, but there is no recent assessment to confirm its status. Other exercises of ex situ conservation were carried out in the campus of the National University of Colombia, Medellin, and in the municipality of Santo Domingo, in Huila, carried out by CAM, but they were not successful. Finally, there is a report on ex situ conservation experiences in the Cachalú Reserve in the department of Santander, led by Fundación Natura. In this ex situ experience, conservation strategies were developed within productive systems in the Corredor Guantiva - La Rusia - Iguaque, in the municipality of Arcabuco, department of Boyacá.

In Colombia, the Black Oak was officially included in the list of endangered plants in a decree by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development in 2014. That decree also instructs government institutions dealing with endangered biodiversity to develop and implement conservation plans for those species in the list.
