The estimated generation length for this species is between 65 and 85 years. The population was calculated to be 435,669 mature individuals in the year 2000 (Burton 2008). This estimate was based on observed population density in multiple sample sites in various habitats throughout the Cayman Islands combined with land cover mapping that defined the areas of remaining habitat. Three generations ago for this long-lived species pre-dates major human impacts. Reconstruction of pre-impacted habitats suggests that the past population of this species was in the range of 600,000 individuals. Deforestation rates are believed to have been exponential in proportion with recorded human population growth (Pedley 2007). Human population is currently doubling every 12 years, implying that the future population of Coccothrinax proctorii in 100 years time will be of the order of 123,500 and will be largely restricted to protected areas. Due to current deforestation visually estimated to be of the order of 3 km2 over the last decade we estimate the 2013 population to be approximately 428,500 individuals.

Large-scale loss of habitat due to deforestation is expected to cause massive reductions in population, over the generation time for this long-lived species. This trend will eventually overwhelm the vigorous reseeding currently seen in disturbed areas. In recent years, fire from agricultural clearing has been penetrating increasingly into the surrounding habitat. The native vegetation is not fire adapted therefore, when fire happens, there is a significant species mortality.

A seed collection, now banked at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, was made in 2012 (T. Heller pers. comm. 2013). Protection of the xerophytic shrubland habitat on all three islands is the most pressing conservation need for this species. This species is included in the Cayman Islands National Biodiversity Action Plan 2009 (Cottam et al. 2009).
