In the Dominican Republic, two subpopulations are now known. One consists of 16 adults and two juveniles. None of the adults have reached reproductive age and are not considered to be mature individuals. One dead individual was also recorded. The newly recorded subpopulation in the Dominican Republic is noted to be larger (Henderson 2023) but is thought to be fewer than 150 mature individuals.

One of the locations of the species in the Dominican Republic is near the shore of Lago Enriquillo. In the past 10 years the lake has experienced an unexpected rise in water level which has caused flooding to surrounding farmland and roads. The cause of this water level change is not yet known, but could be as a result of climatic change. Hydrological changes at Lago Enriquillo therefore pose a potential threat towards the species. Free roaming goats seem to graze on young individuals. The species is also threatened by felling as well as infrastructure development.

The species occurs within the protected area Parque Nacional Lago Enriquillo e Isla Cabritos, in the Dominican Republic. Jestrow et al. (2018) note that the species is not currently held in any ex situ collections. It is recommended that seed is collected and ex situ collections established to facilitate future reintroduction of the species in its native habitat (Peguero et al. 2015). More surveys are needed to see if there are other subpopulations.
