Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
The main threat to the species is the use of the species for its fibre or ornamental purpose as well as the loss of habitat due to deforestation, development and agricultural expansion. The species can be locally common along the Barahona Peninsula and appears to be much less threatened from a population perspective. However, the subpopulations of the species on the Haitian side of the border are likely very much threatened by cutting the habitat for charcoal, wildfires, free-range grazing and other factors. The Haitian population has not been seen since Bailey collected in the area in the mid-1940s (Bailey 1947). The status of the population is considered to be in decline as inferred by ongoing deforestation leading to a loss of habitat and a decline in habitat quality (Global Forest Watch 2022).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Peguero et al. (2015) and Jestrow et al. (2017) assessed the species as Endangered. This assessment agrees with their assessments, particularly in terms of its restricted distribution and the reality that the subpopulations are not fully protected despite their presence within the boundaries of Jaragua National Park. BGCI lists five ex situ sites worldwide for the species (BGCI 2022). Jestrow et al. (2017) provide a conservation framework for the threatened Coccothrinax species in the Caribbean.
