This species is common and widespread in Sicily, Sardinia and Spain, but less common in some other parts of its range (e.g., France, northern Italy). Sub-populations declined in the past as a result of over-utilisation, but the species is much less commonly used now. In some areas subpopulations are declining in some areas due to pests, habitat degradation and loss.

The introduced moth Paysandisia archon has been observed to cause damage and mortality to Chamaerops humilis (EFSA PLH Panel 2014). In Sicily, the larvae of the beetle Rhynchophorus ferrugineus feeds on the meristem of this palms which kills the plant.
Past utilisation of the species was a threat and populations declined as a result. Habitat loss due to human development and urbanisation is the primary current threat, and is likely to be significant in parts of the species' range.
