The taxon is potentially threatened by deforestation due to land use change for agriculture and livestock. The species is frequently located in disturbed areas and on the edges of roads and highways. Therefore, it is considered to be abundant with stable subpopulations.

There are 73 ex situ collections (BGCI 2021). In Belize, this species occurs in the Forest Reserves Cockscomb Basin, Columbia, Deep River, and Mountain Pine Ridge. In Costa Rica, it occurs in the National Parks "Barbilla", "Braulio Carrillo", "Carara", "Corcovado", "Guanacaste", "Juan Castro Blanco", "La Amistad", "Rincón de la Vieja", "Volcán Arenal", "Volcán Tenorio"; Nature Reserves "Cabo Blanco"; National Refuge "Curú", "Gandoca-Manzanillo"; Biological Reserve "Hitoy Cerere". In El Salvador, it is found in the National Park "El Imposible", and Protected Area "Cerro Cacahuatique". In Guatemala, it occurs in the Protected Biotopes "Mario Dary Rivera", and "Maya". In Honduras, it occurs in the National Park "Pico Pijol"; Biosphere Reserve "Sierra de las Minas". In Mexico, it occurs in Biosphere Reserves "Los Tuxtlas" (Veracruz), "La Sepultura" (Chiapas), "El Triunfo" (Chiapas); and National Park "Palenque" (Chiapas). In Panama, it also occurs in the "Fortuna" Forest Reserve, and National Parks "Santa Fé", and "Darien".
