The principal threat for this species is the high level of commercial harvesting and it is also threatened by habitat loss and degradation (J.C. Hernández-Barrios and A. Alvarado-Segura pers. comm. 2014).

This species is legally protected in Mexico by the national list of species at risk of extinction, NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, where it is listed under the category “threatened” under the old name Nunnezharia paradoxa (A; SEMARNAT 2010). It is distributed within several reserves including Calakmul, Montes Azules, Lacantún and Los Tuxtlas.
