It is considered to be an abundant plant with a large and stable population. This species currently does not have survival problems. The many fertile collections suggest that there are still a reasonable number of healthy populations.

The taxon is potentially threatened by deforestation due to land use change for agricultural activities, and livestock ranching. Forest fires are another threat. However, this species has been recorded from protected areas so it is expected that it does not present survival problems.

There are 12 ex situ collections (BGCI 2021). This species is legally protected in Mexico by the national list of species at risk of extinction, NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, where it is listed under the category “threatened” (A; SEMARNAT 2010). In Guatemala, it occurs in the Protective Reserve of Manantiales "Cerro San Gil". In Honduras, it is found in the National Parks "Cerro Azul Copán", "Pico Bonito", and Botanical Garden "Lancetilla". In Mexico, it occurs in the Biosphere Reserve "Selva El Ocote" (Chiapas), and Flora and Fauna Protection Area "Nahá" (Chiapas).
