Chamaedorea alternans is found in the Biological Station of Los Tuxtlas (Hodel 1992), which is owned by the National Autonomous University of Mexico and confers some protection to some of the subpopulations of this species.

This species is legally protected in Mexico by the national list of species at risk of extinction, NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, where it is listed under the “threatened” category (A; SEMARNAT 2010).
