In a demographic study, Perez-Farrera et al. (2006) estimated that there were four subpopulations comprising a total of 1,000-1,500 plants. Based on size classes, 40-45% were  adults. Although the decline in one location has been 50%, the estimated decline across the total population is 20-30% within the past two generations (90 years).

The threats to their survival are caused by multiple factors, most of which are anthropogenic: (a) uncontrolled fires, (b) human demographic expansion, (c) illegal collecting and (d) habitat transformation.
