The subpopulation at Ocampo in Tamaulipas consists of 300 plants. This population was growing on limestone boulders dislodged by roadworks along a cliff and thus it may be a newly recruited site. One other subpopulation is known.

This species has been severely affected by habitat destruction as a result of land clearing for agriculture. Furthermore, the subpopulations have been drastically reduced as a result of prolonged collecting.
