The type subpopulation of this species in Veracruz has been extirpated. In Oaxaca state, there is a population of 40 plants as well as another recently discovered subpopulation with an estimated 300 plants. However, Martínez-Domínguez et al. (2017) indicate a larger distribution range which in turn could result in a larger population size. No recent population data are available. Overall based on habitat declines within its range an ongoing decline of ca. 75% over three generations is suspected, while collecting for ornamental trade may be having additional impacts.

This species has been severely impacted by habitat destruction, mainly the degradation of forest habitats through human resettlement in the Uxpanapa region (Osborne and Vasquez-Torres 2009). The expansion of coffee plantations has also had a detrimental effect on the habitat. As with all Ceratozamia spp, this species is also susceptible to illegal removal for ornamental purposes.

This species is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Appendices. No subpopulations occur within protected areas. The species is poorly represented in ex situ collections and the only collection seems to be a small colony at the Jardin Botanico Clavijiero in Xalapa, Mexico. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of populations will support the conservation of this species.
