Ceratozamia decumbens is known from five subpopulations. Population estimates from 2008 were of less than 1,000 individuals from 3 of these subpopulations. There may however be other larger subpopulations (Martínez-Domínguez et al. 2018).

Ceratozamia decumbens may be at risk from commercial collecting which is a risk for many Ceratozamia spp. The removal of the herbaceous layer and undergrowth for the expansion of coffee plantations over recent years has severely affected the known subpopulations.

Ceratozamia decumbens is listed in CITES Appendix I. It occurs within the State Reserve Metlac Rio Blanco. Long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
