Description complète des menacesExpert
There are no known threats specifically to this species. The evergreen rain forests where this species occurs, once covering large areas of the island (up to 70% (Conservation International 2007)), are now confined to a few small scattered areas in the central mountains, with only around 10% of this forest considered undisturbed (Birdlife International 2003). New Caledonia has a large nickel mining industry, with open-cast mining leading to large expanses of deforestation and habitat destruction, resulting in bare slopes and waste heaps, and the erosion of mining devastated areas has caused the siltation and destruction of streams. Today, open-cast mining is better managed, and more localized than in the past. Other pressures on New Caledonian biodiversity include bush fires, often deliberately lit to clear land for agriculture and for hunting wild pigs (Conservation International 2007). There are a large number of introduced alien species present throughout the main island, which are outcompeting and replacing much of the original vegetation, although the effects on this species are unknown.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
This species is listed on CITES appendix II- Trade controlled to avoid use incompatible with species survival. Use in trade unknown. France has recently made conservation needs of New Caledonia a priority, and international NGOs (WWF, Birdlife International) have recently become involved in New Caledonia. Currently there are a few relatively small reserves, with IUCN classified reserves covering only 2.6% of land. Only 54% of the conservation area is covered by mining restrictions (Conservation International 2007), and many of the protected areas have poor management or protective legislation. Specimens have been recorded from several protected areas (Mount Panie, Aoupine Fauna Reserve, Montane des Sources and Provincial de Thy Nature Reserves). Due to development on the island, it would be sensible to consider creating well defined conservation areas, with effective management and enforcement of protective legislation, including mining restrictions within their boundaries. Measures to control invasive species should also be implemented. Seeds have not been collected for the Millennium Seed Bank.
