État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
This species is localised, rare, and restricted to mountain areas on Crete. The population has been estimated to be c.500 individuals (Rankou et al. 2011) and c.300-450 individuals (EU Article 11 Habitat Directive reporting, 2007-2012), but is possibly higher (perhaps +/-1,000 individuals). It is shared between at least 11 localities (based on contiguous grid cells in the map in Kretzschmar et al. (2002), likely corresponding to three main subpopulations in the western, central, and eastern mountain areas). The western area holds around 150 known individuals (Thanos et al. 2013). In the framework of the CRETAPLANT project, an inventory of the localities and of the population was carried out (Thanos and Fournaraki 2007, Commission of the European Communities 2009) and the population trend was found to be decreasing, but it is not known if there is still now a continuing decline in the number of mature individuals. The EU Article 11 report for the period 2007-2012 considered the short-term population trend to be stable.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
This species is restricted to very fragile habitats, which are under serious threat (Thanos and Fournaraki 2007, Tsiftsis and Tsiripidis 2016). Subpopulations are severely threatened by erosion, road and path construction, deforestation and forest fires, but the overall threat is from overgrazing (Phitos et al. 2009). In most cases fires on Crete start in the lowlands and then spread into higher altitude zones where this species is found, burning the vegetation. Climate change is likely to impact mountain habitats in the future.
