Centrolepis glabra

This species occurs in restricted plant communities, some of which are threatened. The taxon is however found in a wide range of habitats and ecoregions throughout southern Australia. Direct threats to this species include weed invasion, alteration of the hydrological cycle which may restrict the number of suitable habitats, activities associated with mineral exploitation which disturb the seed bank, inappropriate fire regime as spring fires may result in local extinction if they occur before the plant has reached maturity and replenished the soil seed bank, trampling and grazing by stock and feral species, clearing for conversion to agricultural land and harmful agricultural management, road maintenance e.g. grading, construction of drainage channels and mowing of roadside vegetation and increased salinity. The presence of the taxon in disturbed areas e.g., roadsides and cultivated and managed areas (ca 60% of the range) indicates some resilience to disturbance but high levels may influence the ability to flower and set seeds. For most of its range the taxon occurs in remote areas of low human footprint (Sanderson et al. 2002, Gilfillan and Barrett 2004).

The whole range of this species occurs in protected areas e.g., Ramsar Convention, Conservation Parks, National Parks, Natural Features Reserves, Nature Conservation Reserve, Wilderness Protection Area and Nature Parks. Legislation to control broadscale clearance has been introduced in most of the range and measures benefiting the taxon are in place in many of the protected areas e.g., monitoring of ground water depth and quality, weed control, protection of areas with high conservation value, vehicle restriction, fencing, fire management strategies and pest control programs. The taxon is legally protected under the national parks and wildlife act 1972 in New South Wales and South Australia. Populations should be regularly monitored where the species is uncommon. Research on the taxonomy, ecology and tolerance to disturbance or salinity of the taxon would be useful as little is known about the species and the family Centrolepidaceae.
