This species' native distribution overlaps with several protected areas in tropical Africa, inferred using the GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) suchas as Mikumi National Park, in Tanzania and Belete Gera, National Forest Priority Area, in Ethiopia, so passive conservation is presumed in this area. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species.

The genus Pennisetum (syn. Cenchrus) is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).

According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2017) this species has only one living collection in one botanical garden worldwide, although the size of the collections are not detailed in this resource. There are twenty three germplasm accessions (28,481 seed) held at Svalbard (SGSV 2017).
