According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2017) this species has only one living collection in one botanical garden worldwide, although the size of the collections are not detailed in this resource. Genesys (2017) records there are sixty germplasm accessions globally. Two accessions (1600 seeds) are held at Svalbard (SGSV 2017).
The genus Pennisetum(syn. Cenchrus) is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).
This species' native distribution overlaps with several protected areas in tropical Africa, inferred using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) such as Sahel Reserve in Burkina Faso, so passive conservation is presumed in this area. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species.
