The genus Pennisetum (syn. Cenchrus) is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).
The National Plant Germplasm System holds thirty-four germplasm accessions of this species and eleven accessions are held in the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership. According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2017) this species has a living collection at Endebess in Kenya. Seed is conserved in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (one germplasm accession comprising 1,000 seeds). Seed is collected and stored ex situ in Kenya and sent to the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, part of the Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change project (Dempewolf 2014).
This species' native distribution overlaps with several protected areas in tropical Africa, inferred using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) so passive conservation is presumed in these areas. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring.
