Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

The genus Pennisetum(syn. Cenchrus) is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).

According to Genesys (2017) there is only one germplasm collection held globally. With only one germplasm held globally, the collection of genetically representative germplasm material for ex situ conservation of this species is recommended. The Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2017) states this species has seven living collections in botanical gardens worldwide, although the size and location of the collections are not detailed in this resource.

This species' native distribution overlaps with several protected areas in South America, inferred using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) such as Área de Conservación Regional de Choquequirao in Peru and in Parque Nacional Podocarpus in Ecuador, so passive conservation is presumed in this area. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species.
