There is little information on population distribution, size and trend for this species, with this limited evidence it is suspected that this species is stable across its global native range.  According to Burkill (1995) it is abundant and becoming a persistent weed in cultivation, and it is abundant in India (Moulik 1997).

According to Genesys (2017) there are three germplasm accessions held globally.  This species has only one living collection in one botanical garden worldwide, although the size of the collections are not detailed in this resource (BGCI 2017).

The genus Pennisetum (syn. Cenchrus) is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).

This species' native distribution overlaps with several protected areas, inferred using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) such as parc National du Niokolo-Koba in Senegal and Pama Reserve in Burkina Faso,  so passive conservation is presumed in this area. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species.
