The genus Pennisetum (syn. Cenchrus) is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).

The National Plant Germplasm System holds three germplasm accessions of this species, however only one of these accessions is from its native region (India). Seven accessions are held in India (Genesys 2017). One accession is held in the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership. According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2013) this species has a living collection at Endebess in Kenya. As part of the Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change project, seeds of this species are being collected in Kenya and stored ex situ in the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, Kew.

This species' native distribution overlaps with at least one protected area in Mudumalai National Park, India, inferred using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011), as well as the Eastern Afromontane, Madagascar and the Indian Ocean Islands and Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspots (Bawa 2007) so passive conservation is presumed in these areas. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species.
