The genus Pennisetum (syn. Cenchrus) is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009).
According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2017) this species has two living collections in botanical gardens worldwide, although the size of the collections are not detailed in this resource. Genesys (2017) states there are two germplasm accessions held globally. Svalbad (SGSV 2017) has one germplasm accession (200 seeds).
This species' native distribution overlaps with several protected areas, inferred using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) such as Lake Woods Conservation Covenant National Park and Ngamoowalem Conservation Park, so passive conservation is presumed in this area. However, there is no evidence of active management or monitoring of this species.
