Castanopsis wilsonii occurs in four subpopulations in southern Viet Nam. One of these is inside a protected area. The species is confined to mid-elevation ranges and is unlikely to have remnant subpopulations in the lowlands. Viet Nam has experienced large-scale deforestation and habitat conversion for urbanization, agriculture and road construction.

The wider area has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture, road construction and urbanization. Currently, this species is only known from a few sites, one of which is inside a protected area. It is safe to assume that outside this area, the species is a target for local logging and firewood collection.
