This species was found to be the most abundant sub montane Fagaceae species within Gunung Halimun National Park, West Java (Simbolon 2001) where it has a population density of 2–35 trees per ha (Suryanti 2006). However, in Mount Patuha the species is rare with a relative density of about 1% (Junaedi and Mutaqien 2010). Similarly in North Kalimantan in the upper montane forest of Sungaibarang it is present but with a low relative density of 0.2–6.5 % (Bratawinata 1986) and in the lowland forest of Malinau it is very rare with of density of 4 trees per 24 hectares or mean density of 0.7/hectare (Kartawinata et al. 2006a,b). Regeneration in the submontane forest of Mt Halimun is very poor with mortality about equal to recruitment (Simbolon 2001).
It is estimated that overall population has declined by at least 30% over the last 20 years (K. Kartawinata pers. comm. 2017). It is predicted that due to the threat currently posed to lowland dipterocarp forests (through conversion to oil palm) in Sumatra and Kalimantan that the species will continue to decline into the future. To the extent that within Indonesia the species may only reside within National Parks such as Mount Halimun National Park (K. Kartawinata pers. comm. 2017). Considering these decline estimates we predict that over 300 years, population will experience a decline of 50% (1817 to 2117).

There are serious threats to the species within dipterocarp forests, which are currently in decline. Castanopsis tungurrut is at risk from habitat loss and conversion as industrial plantations (such as palm oil) are established or expanded. The species is also threatened by its use for timber, for which it will be selectively logged and overexploited.

This species is reported from one ex situ collection (BGCI 2017) but is known to be present in other Botanic Gardens within Indonesia (Sukarya 2013). It is recommended that further ex situ collections of the species are made and used in forest and national park restoration. Stability of collections should also be improved by planting in parks, as street trees and land rehabilitation. The species is already present in some national parks and protected forests here it is essential that assisted regeneration and restoration action should take place.
