Castanopsis tribuloides occurs in a number of subpopulations throughout China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Lao PDR and Viet Nam. The region has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture (rice, rubber, corn), extensive cattle ranching, road construction and urbanization. Some sites outside protected areas may no longer hold subpopulations of this species.
