Castanopsis thaiensis is known from one subpopulation in Thailand. The region has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture and urbanization. Sites outside protected areas may no longer hold subpopulations of this species.

The main threat to this species is habitat destruction, as the species is endemic and only known from a few sites. Deforestation within and along the national park boundaries is ongoing.
