Castanopsis platyacantha occurs in a number of subpopulations throughout southwestern China. The species is widespread in its native range, but the area has seen much habitat conversion for urbanization and agriculture, as well as extensive forest clearing for logging. The actual number of localities holding extant subpopulations for this species may be significantly reduced.
