Castanopsis phuthoensis is only known from one location in Viet Nam. The region has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture and urbanization. The species is not known from any protected areas and sites outside protected areas may no longer hold subpopulations of this species.

The main threat to the species is habitat destruction as there has been extensive habitat conversion for agriculture and urbanization in the region. The species may also be the target of local logging and firewood collecting.
