Castanopsis oligoneura occurs in a number of subpopulations in Brunei and Malaysian Borneo. The conservation status of some of these is unclear as they are not included in a protected area. Borneo has seen extensive forest clearing, uncontrolled burning and habitat conversion to oil palm over the past decades.

The main threats to this species is land-use change. The wider area has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture and urbanization. The species may be used for local logging and firewood collection, but is not targeted.
