Castanopsis ninhhoensis is confined to one protected area in southern Viet Nam, no other sites are known for this species. There is no information on the number of individuals, but the population is likely to be small.

The species is currently known only from one site in a protected area, where collecting and logging is prohibited. The level of on the ground protection at the site is unclear and should illegal encroachment occur it would threaten this species. The population is expected to be small and may suffer adverse negative effects from stochastic events such as forest fires.
