Castanopsis johorensis occurs in three subpopulations in Indonesia (Sumatra) and Peninsular Malaysia. The area has seen extensive logging, seasonal burning and land conversion to rubber and palm oil plantations. It is very likely that some of these subpopulations outside protected areas no longer hold any individuals.

The wider area has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture and urbanization. Seasonal burning to clear land is a regular practice in the wider area. It is safe to assume that the species is also regularly used for local logging and firewood collection.
