Castanopsis ferox occurs in a number of subpopulations throughout Bangladesh, India, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand and Viet Nam. The area has seen extensive logging and land conversion to intense agriculture such as bananas, rice, rubber and palm oil plantations. It is very likely that some of these subpopulations outside protected areas no longer hold any individuals.
