Castanopsis densispinosa is only known from one subpopulation in southern China (Yunnan) near the border with Viet Nam. The area has seen large-scale habitat conversion and logging so the site may no longer hold this species.

The area has been largely converted for agriculture. It is safe to assume that the species may also be regularly used locally for firewood.

Castanopsis densispinosa is not listed in any ex situ collections on BGCI (2020). This species was assessed nationally as Critically Endangered in China (Qin et al. 2017). Recommended conservation actions include sustainable collection and conservation in ex situ sites as well as additional research on the species to better understand its population size, trends and threats.
