Castanopsis chunii occurs in a number of subpopulations throughout central China. The species is confined to upland areas but in several instances, mapped localities are now occupied by towns/cities and converted areas and subpopulations there are likely to have been lost.

The wider area has seen extensive deforestation and habitat conversion for agriculture, road construction and urbanization. It is likely that the species is used for local firewood.
