Castanopsis chinensis occurs in a number of subpopulations throughout southern China and Viet Nam. Although the species is quite widespread in a large number of sites, the area has seen widespread clearing of forest due to logging and road construction, conversion to intensive agriculture in some locations and rapid urbanization. Some subpopulations may have undergone a population decline but the extent of this is not known.
