Castanopsis birmanica is only known from a single locality in Myanmar. The wider area has seen extensive logging, seasonal burning and land conversion to intense agriculture such as bananas, rice, rubber and palm oil plantations and cattle ranching.

The species is threatened by habitat destruction, as it is known from a single locality. Within Pidaung Wildlife Sanctuary there are permanent human settlements, roads and railway lines, plantations of sugar cane and permanent areas of cultivation which have altered large portions of the original habitat (Rao et al. 2002). The protected area is also highly susceptible to fires (Biswas et al. 2015).
