In the undisturbed lower montane forests in Mt. Gede-Pangrango, West Java, the tree population is about 12 trees/ha (Abdulhadi et al. 1988) and on Mt. Halimun in West Java it ranges from 7 to 13 trees/ha (Mansur et al. 2011, Suryanti 2006). There is concern that natural regeneration could reduce in the future due to the harvesting of fruit which is reducing the seed population and germination. The species is almost extinct from lowland areas in Sumatra due to the clearance of the species' native habitat for the development of palm oil plantation. The species has faced a similar threat on Java but still occurs on this islands in national parks, nature reserves and at high altitudes where in montane forests it has an abundance of 1-15 trees per hectare.

Due to the decline in much of the species habitat over the last few decades population is estimated to have declined by at least 50% over the last three generations.

On Sumatra the rate at which new oil palm plantations are established is equivalent to the rate at which this species is in decline on the island. This threat has the potential to lead to the extinction of this species on the island. In Java the species has been in decline for a long period of time, most likely due to agricultural expansion and logging for timber.

This species is known from one ex situ collection (BGCI PlantSearch 2017). Further ex situ collections of this species should be made and planting of the species in city parks, botanic garden, arboreta, road sides, home gardens and in degraded landscapes should occur. The species is present in protected areas on Java. Inventories and research of the species within some protected areas such as Leuser National Park, Kerinci Seblat National Park and Buklit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra which jointly constitute the Tropical Rain Forest World Heritage area should be conducted. Further information on the species population size, harvest volume and threat from land conversion and timber should be gathered.
