In the undisturbed lower montane forests in Mt. Gede-Pangrango, West Java, the tree population is about 12 trees/ha (Abdulhadi et al. 1988) and on Mt. Halimun in West Java it ranges from 7 to 13 trees/ha (Mansur et al. 2011, Suryanti 2006). There is concern that natural regeneration could reduce in the future due to the harvesting of fruit which is reducing the seed population and germination. The species is almost extinct from lowland areas in Sumatra due to the clearance of the species' native habitat for the development of palm oil plantation. The species has faced a similar threat on Java but still occurs on this islands in national parks, nature reserves and at high altitudes where in montane forests it has an abundance of 1-15 trees per hectare.
Due to the decline in much of the species habitat over the last few decades population is estimated to have declined by at least 50% over the last three generations.
