In the Caucasus 90% of Castanea sativa forest is found on southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, other isolated stands can be found on the northern slopes (Pridnya et al. 1996). In 1956 there was an estimated 70,000–80,000 hectares of C. sativa forest within the Caucasus but in western Caucasus this is estimated to have decreased by approximately two thirds or 50,000 ha between 1956 and 1996 (Pridnya et al. 1996). Within Azerbaijan pure Castanea sativa forests are rare. Here it is found in fragmented mixed forests on south macroslopes of the Great Caucasus and in the Minor Caucasus the species is found over 550 to 600 km in small fragments, not all of which are wild stands. Population decline between 45–50% in Azerbaijan has been reported (Aghayeva 2001). Thirty-eight semi-wild stands have been identified within Lebanon (Masri et al. 2009). The species is relatively genetically diverse; individuals within Turkey show the greatest genetic diversity (Fernández-López et al. 2003). There is no population information for the species within Africa. Within Europe the species is widespread, common and widely cultivated. Overall due to the wide native range of the species population is likely to be large and stable. It is however reported that the species population is discontinuous in most parts of its range (Fernández-López et al. 2003) and it is not considered a dominant species.

Description complète des menacesExpert
Within the Caucasus the species has historically been threatened by disease and logging. Disease still threatens the species as it is susceptible to many pathogens, those of greatest concern are the fungal pathogen Chryphonectria parasitica and species of Phytophora which result in chestnut dieback and dessication (Pridnya et al. 1996, Aghayeva 2001). Loss of individuals to pests and diseases is likely to increase due to climate change making environments more suitable and international trade catalysing the spread of potential infections. Wild populations are at risk from genetic intogression with cultivated populations which is reducing the overall species genetic diversity (Fernández-López et al. 2003). This is of greatest concern where orchards are being abandoned across Europe (Fernández-López et al. 2003); this increases disease susceptibility of the species. A lack of management of forests can result in them being out-competed by other tree species (Conedera et al. 2016). Pridnya et al. (1996) reports a lack of regeneration of Castanea sativa within forests of The Caucasus Biosphere Forest Preserve where average age of trees is 130 years with very few trees being less than 40 years old. The species is also likely to be adversely affected by climate change, due to the species in tolerance to drought. It is likely there will be a decline in the suitable habitat for the species (EFDAC 2015). Wild populations may also still be affected by the species use for timber however this will be much reduced due to the management and cultivation of timber forests.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
The species is found in several protected areas across its entire range and also Natura 2000 sites within Europe. Also within Europe the species habitat is protected within Annex 1 of the European Commission Habitat Directive – Castanea sativa woods (Code 1260). The species is regionally assessed within Europe as Least Concern (2013), and is Least Concern in Belarus (Ermakova 2005), Germany (Bundesamt für Naturschutz 2012), Switzerland (Moser et al. 2002) and the UK (Cheffings and Farrell 2005). However it is listed as Endangered in Bulgaria (Petrova and Vladimirov 2009, Peev and Vladimirov 2011). It is recommended that population and threat information for the species be gathered in Syria, Lebanon and within the species' African range. The forests should also be monitored for decline across its range due to pests and diseases. The impact of climate change on the species should also be investigated. This species is found in 140 ex situ collections (BGCI 2017).
